Our Favorite Helichrysum Flowers

Hardy Annual, Strawflower, or Everlasting, is an easy plant to grow, with a wide range of colors. The true petals are found in the center of each flower and they are surrounded by colorful, straw-like bracts. The flowers bloom from summer to early autumn. Harvest flowers for drying before they open fully and hang them upside down in cool, dark place. Seeds need light to germinate; plant in porous soil. They prosper during hot summers, but high humidity or continual damp may cause stem rot.
Tips:
When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant and grow on in cooler conditions. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost 30cm (12in) apart in sun and ordinary well drained soil.
Harvesting:
Pick when foliage is quite dry and the flowers are well open, tie in small bunches and hang upside down in a dry, well ventilated place until dry.

A hardy annual that is much sought after as a dried flower. Huge flowers that are deep rose with dark centers. They also make long lasting cut flowers.

2283 Pink and White Everlasting Rhodanthe chlorocephala
New from our grower in Australia! This is a small, annual species up to about 12 inches high and 12 inches wide. It has linear or elliptical-shaped leaves which are green to greyish green in colour and up to 25 mm long. The flower heads appear mainly in winter and spring but sporadic flowering can occur at other times. The heads occur singly at the ends of the stems and are 10 - 60 mm in diameter with yellow or greenish centres surrounded by white or pink, papery bracts.
This species has been a popular plant in cultivation for many years because of its very colourful display, especially in massed plantings. It is suited to most temperate areas and will often germinate in the garden from seed produced from the previous season's plantings. It prefers well drained soils in a sunny position.
