For zones 8-10. A short-lived penstemon (16-40") with brilliant red flowers from spring to early summer. An excellent hummingbird plant. The arching tip of Penstemon eatonii is typical of Penstemons; the pliable stem tips are weighted by the young flower buds. As the stalk elongates, cells become stronger. The corolla lobes are very small so that at a glance the flower appears to be a very narrow long closed tube. The blazing red of Penstemon eatonii is very common from trails in Mesa Verde National Park to open expanses of Utah and Arizona.

We plant it where all the other plants died because it is too hot and dry. People who see this think it is a foxglove, very showy!

Proboscidea spp. Cultivated by many Southwest tribes, the seed is rich in oil and protein. The black fiber of the fruit or "claw" is used in basketry. Dried seeds can be peeled and eaten, and are sometimes used to polish ollas. The young fruits, when still tender, can be cooked as an okra-like vegetable.
