Fragrant Butterfly Bush Seed ( Perennial )

Want a guaranteed butterfly and hummingbird magnet? Or, one of the most fragrant of shrubs? Plant a buddleia (butterfly bush).
This fast-growing, deciduous shrub with long, arching shoots will reach heights of 6 to 8 feet. Although the green leaves add a welcome bit of color to any landscape, it is the masses of blossoms-long, seductively spiked trusses-that are special. From summer to autumn, the butterfly bush bears dense panicles, 12 inches or more long, that fill the air with a fruity scent.
At its northern limits, the shrubs can die back, sometimes all the way to the ground. No matter. Butterfly bush is vigorous and undemanding and will send up new shoots, given a sunny location and average garden soil.

SF397 Fragrant Butterfly Bush ( Buddleia Davidii )

Fragrant Butterfly Bush (Buddleia davidii) is a fast-growing flowering perennial shrub renowned for its long, arching clusters of sweetly fragrant blooms that attract butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and countless other beneficial pollinators. Blooming continuously from early summer until frost, this garden favorite produces graceful flower spikes in shades ranging from lavender and purple to pink, white, and blue, creating one of the finest wildlife-friendly plants available for sunny landscapes.

Garden Uses:

Fragrant Butterfly Bush makes an outstanding specimen plant, flowering hedge, mixed perennial border accent, pollinator garden centerpiece, or cottage garden favorite. It pairs beautifully with coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, salvias, phlox, ornamental grasses, and other summer-flowering perennials. Its long bloom season and graceful habit make it especially valuable for adding height, fragrance, and constant color to the landscape.

Growing Information:

Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost or sow outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Lightly press seeds onto the soil surface, as they require light for best germination. Maintain temperatures between 68-75°F during germination, which typically occurs within 14-28 days. Butterfly Bush thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and becomes highly drought tolerant once established. Prune plants back hard in early spring to encourage vigorous new growth and abundant flowering throughout the season. Removing spent flower spikes promotes continuous blooming until frost.
