Calluna Seed ( Perennial )

You should grow Calluna (heather) for its long-lasting, colorful flowers and evergreen foliage, which provide year-round interest and attractive textures in gardens and containers. It serves as an excellent, low-maintenance groundcover, supports pollinators like bees and butterflies, and offers excellent value in mixed plantings with other acidic-soil-loving plants like dwarf conifers. Its drought and deer resistance, along with its ability to thrive in poor, acidic, and well-drained soils, make it a versatile and hardy choice for many gardens.

TWT064 Heather ( Calluna vulgaris )

Heather (Calluna vulgaris) is one of the world's most beloved evergreen perennials, forming dense carpets of fine-textured foliage topped with graceful spikes of tiny bell-shaped flowers in shades of purple, pink, lavender, rose, or white. Native to the windswept moorlands and heathlands of Europe, Heather provides year-round beauty with its evergreen foliage and abundant blooms that brighten the garden from midsummer into autumn. Its exceptional hardiness, drought tolerance, and low-maintenance nature make it a favorite for rock gardens, borders, and natural landscapes.

Garden Uses:

Heather is outstanding for rock gardens, alpine gardens, borders, slopes, foundation plantings, woodland edges, and mass groundcover plantings. It creates spectacular drifts when planted in groups and combines beautifully with dwarf conifers, ornamental grasses, heaths, sedums, and spring-flowering bulbs. It is especially attractive in cottage gardens and naturalistic landscapes where its evergreen foliage provides year-round interest.

Growing Information:

Sow seeds on the surface of a moist seed-starting mix without covering, as light improves germination. Maintain temperatures around 65-70°F while keeping the soil consistently moist. Germination may take several weeks. Heather thrives in full sun and requires acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. It dislikes heavy clay and poorly drained locations. Once established, plants become drought tolerant and require very little maintenance beyond light pruning after flowering to maintain a compact shape. Grows 12-24 inches tall.
