Gaura Seed ( Perennial )

The Bride Gaura (Gaura lindheimeri) is a graceful, long-blooming perennial admired for its airy wands of pure white flowers that flutter above the foliage like tiny butterflies. Also known as Wand Flower or Beeblossom, this elegant plant brings movement, softness, and months of delicate color to sunny borders and naturalistic plantings. The slender stems rise from compact clumps of narrow green leaves, producing masses of starry white blooms from early summer through fall.

Although the individual flowers are delicate, the plant itself is remarkably tough. The Bride thrives in heat, tolerates drought once established, and performs beautifully in well-drained soils where many more delicate perennials struggle. Its refined, cloud-like appearance makes it useful in both formal and informal gardens, especially where a light, floating texture is desired.

Garden Uses

The Bride Gaura is excellent for perennial borders, cottage gardens, wildflower gardens, prairie-style plantings, butterfly gardens, rock gardens, and xeriscapes. Its tall, slender flower stems add height without visual heaviness, allowing it to blend naturally among grasses, salvias, coneflowers, coreopsis, yarrow, lavender, and other sun-loving perennials.

It is especially useful for softening the edges of paths, patios, retaining walls, and mixed beds. In containers, The Bride adds elegant vertical movement and a light, airy quality when combined with trailing plants and bold foliage. The flowers also make charming additions to informal bouquets.

Growing Information

The Bride Gaura grows best in full sun and well-drained soil. It tolerates sandy, gravelly, and moderately poor soils, but dislikes heavy wet soil, especially during winter. Plants generally reach 24 to 36 inches tall with a spread of 18 to 24 inches.

Seeds may be started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last expected frost or sown directly outdoors after the soil has warmed. Sow seeds lightly, pressing them into the soil surface and covering only very thinly. Maintain moderate warmth and even moisture during germination. Seedlings should be transplanted carefully once established, as mature plants develop a deep taproot and prefer not to be disturbed.

Once established, The Bride requires little maintenance. Water regularly during the first season to help plants develop strong roots, then reduce watering as plants mature. Removing spent stems can encourage fresh flowering, and cutting plants back lightly in midsummer may promote a fuller second flush of bloom.
