Their large, Crazy-Daisy like flowers have almost flourescent qualities which are generally contrasted with white or cream centres and a dark eye.
They are very easy to grow providing you give them plenty of direct sunshine where they will reward with a thick, low carpet of narrow succulent foliage with the flowers held just above for a stunning display of many colours from pink through to orange, apricot, white and reds.
They go well on patios, alpine and rockery as well as coastal gardens and are best grown in borders, raised beds, pots and tubs or even window boxes.
Bellidiformis Mix (Dorotheanthus bellidiformis) is a dazzling blend of brilliantly colored Living Daisy flowers that quickly transforms sunny gardens into carpets of vibrant color. Native to the arid regions of South Africa, these low-growing annuals produce masses of silky, daisy-like blooms in brilliant shades of scarlet, crimson, rose, pink, orange, salmon, yellow, white, and lavender. The flowers open wide in bright sunshine, creating a sparkling display that seems almost to glow under the midday sun.
Compact plants form dense, spreading mats of succulent green foliage that remain covered with blooms for weeks during late spring and summer. Their exceptional tolerance for heat, drought, poor soils, and coastal conditions has made Living Daisies favorites for rock gardens, borders, containers, and water-wise landscapes. Bellidiformis Mix provides an ever-changing tapestry of cheerful colors while requiring remarkably little maintenance.
Garden Uses
Bellidiformis Mix is perfect for rock gardens, borders, edging, raised beds, alpine gardens, containers, hanging baskets, window boxes, and xeriscapes. Its low-growing habit makes it an outstanding groundcover for sunny locations where brilliant seasonal color is desired.
The vivid flowers combine beautifully with alyssum, gazania, portulaca, dwarf marigolds, ice plants, dianthus, and ornamental grasses. Mass plantings create breathtaking displays that resemble colorful floral carpets stretching across the garden.
Growing Information
Bellidiformis Mix thrives in full sun and requires well-drained soil. Sandy, gravelly, rocky, and average garden soils are all suitable, while poorly drained soils should be avoided. Mature plants generally grow 4 to 8 inches tall and spread 10 to 18 inches.
Sow seeds directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed or start indoors 4 to 6 weeks earlier. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface, covering only very lightly, as light improves germination. Maintain temperatures between 65 and 70°F. Germination usually occurs within 7 to 14 days.
Once established, plants require very little supplemental watering and thrive during hot, sunny weather. Avoid overwatering, as excessively wet soil may reduce flowering and plant vigor. Removing spent blooms encourages even longer flowering.
