Leaves give a citrusy scent when bruised, with the lemon smell giving the common name lemon scented bottle brush.
Callistemon citrinus has brilliant red flowers that are larger and more showy than those of weeping bottle brush, with the clusters 4 to 6 inches long and 2 to 2 1/2 inches wide. Most profuse flowering is in spring to early summer, peaking in May, but flowers appear in waves throughout the year.
Grow lemon bottle brush as a 10 to 15 foot high multi-stemmed bush or a 20 foot tall tree.
Flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and orioles.
Hardy for zones 8-11. Can be grown in containers in cooler zones.
