The common name of spider flower comes from the appearance of the long, thread-like stamens of the individual flowers and the elongate seedpods that develop below the blooming flowers. It has been a garden favorite since the 1800's.

These Cleome grow 3 to 5 feet tall and produce vivacious 5-6 inch blooms in rose red, white and violet. Heady profusion of bell-shaped clusters perched on sturdy 3–4 stalks. Delicate new 1" blooms appear each afternoon, nicely counterpointed by lavish, dense, dark foliage.
