Common Houseleek Sempervivum Seeds

Common Houseleek (Sempervivum tectorum) is the original and most famous member of the Hens and Chicks family, treasured for centuries for its remarkable hardiness, perfectly symmetrical rosettes, and ability to thrive where few other plants can survive. Forming dense colonies of fleshy, pointed leaves in shades of green, blue-green, bronze, and reddish-purple, this evergreen succulent provides year-round beauty with almost no maintenance. During summer, mature rosettes produce impressive flower stalks topped with clusters of star-shaped pink blossoms before giving way to the next generation of young offsets, ensuring the colony continues to flourish for years to come.

Common Houseleek is ideal for rock gardens, alpine gardens, green roofs, stone walls, trough gardens, succulent containers, fairy gardens, retaining walls, gravel gardens, and planting between stepping stones. Its attractive geometric rosettes provide year-round texture and pair beautifully with sedums, creeping thyme, saxifrages, hardy ice plants, dwarf ornamental grasses, and miniature conifers. It is equally at home in formal alpine collections and casual cottage gardens.

Sow seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the final spring frost. Scatter seeds over the surface of a fine, sharply drained seed-starting mix and gently press them into the soil without covering deeply, as light promotes germination. Maintain temperatures between 65° and 70°F while keeping the growing medium lightly moist. Germination generally occurs within 14 to 28 days.

Transplant seedlings into full sun or light afternoon shade in very well-drained sandy, gravelly, or rocky soil. Common Houseleek thrives in lean soils and should never remain in standing water. Once established, plants require very little supplemental watering and tolerate heat, drought, wind, poor soils, and severe winter cold. Mature plants naturally produce numerous offsets that gradually develop into attractive expanding colonies.
