MON101 Long Keeper
The "Long Keeper" tomato is an heirloom variety specifically bred for its extended storage capabilities, allowing gardeners to enjoy homegrown tomatoes for 6 to 12 weeks—and sometimes up to 4 months—after harvest. These tomatoes are typically harvested in late fall before the first frost when they show a pale pink blush; they then slowly ripen to a golden orange-red in a cool, dark storage area.
Originally introduced by Burpee in 1979, this variety is prized as a "winter storage" tomato that bridges the gap between the end of the growing season and the next year's crop. Produces medium-sized, round fruits weighing approximately 6 to 8 ounces. The skin is a unique golden orange-red when ripe, while the interior flesh is pink to medium-red.
Determinate, reaching heights of 3 to 5 feet. It typically takes 75 to 80 days from transplanting to reach maturity.
Storage and Harvesting Tips: To achieve the advertised 3-month shelf life, specific storage conditions must be met to prevent rot and ensure proper ripening. Harvest only unblemished and crack-free fruits; any damaged tomatoes should be used immediately. Store in a cool area maintained between 65°F and 68°F. Ensure fruits are not touching each other. Some gardeners recommend wrapping them in wax paper or placing them in single layers on newspaper.
Whole Plant Method: Alternatively, some growers pull up the entire plant and hang it upside down in a basement or cool room to allow the fruit to ripen on the vine over several months.
